Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

DEFINITION:

After having suffered or witnessed a traumatic, terrible and terrifying experience a disorder of this type can develop.  The patient tries to stay as far as possible from anything which reminds them of that terrible event, such as the place where it occurred, the people related with the act, etc.

COMMON PHYSICAL REACTIONS:

  • Palpitations and tachycardia
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Thoracic tightness
  • Dizziness

MENTAL SYMPTOMS:

  • Insecurity.
  • Repeated and invasive thoughts of the traumatic situation.
  • Nightmares.
  • State of hyper-alertness, constant tension.
  • Feelings of guilt and shame.
  • Difficulty in concentrating.
  • Irritability.
  • Affective indifference.
  • General psychological discomfort.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT IS NOT TREATED:

  • Depression or other anxiety disorders.
  • Suicidal thoughts.
  • Abuse of Psychoactive substances.
  • Stress.
  • High physiological activation.
  • Development of feelings of guilt.
  • Behavioural problems.
