Specific phobias

DEFINITION:

It is an excessive and extremely intense irrational fear before the presence of an object or specific situation.  Some examples of specific phobias are fear of flying, of storms, of seeing blood, of spiders etc. Those who present this disorder avoid confronting the feared situation.

FREQUENT PHYSICAL REACTIONS:

  • Palpitations and tachycardia
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Thoracic tightness
  • Dizziness

FREQUENT IDEAS:

  • "This plane is going to crash"
  • "I can't stand hospitals"
  • "Spiders repulse me"
  • "Darkness makes me panic"

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT IS NOT TREATED:

  • Limitation of both social and working activities.
  • Loss of quality of life.
  • Appearance of other mental and physical disorders.
