Panic disorder

DEFINITION:

Sensation of sudden and unexpected terror or fear with fear of dying or loss of control.

FREQUENT PHYSICAL REACTIONS:

  • Palpitations and tachycardia
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Thoracic tightness
  • Dizziness 

FREQUENT IDEAS:

  • "I'm going to die"
  • "I'm going to have a heart attack"
  • "I'm going to faint"
  • "I'm going to go crazy"
  • "I'm going to lose control"

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT IS NOT TREATED:

  • Excessive preoccupation for health.
  • Fear of leaving the house or of being in places where help cannot be received or where escape can be difficult or embarrassing.
  • Complication with other mental disorders (e.g. agoraphobia, depression).
